Museum Educator

Reports to: Educational Leadership Team
Status: Full Time

Position Description: The Museum Educator position entails development and implementation of onsite and offsite nature and environmental education programming for a wide variety of audiences varying in ages from early childhood to adults. Significant emphasis will be on environmental science teaching and non-formal curriculum development. Work will be in these education program areas:   on-site school field trip workshops, custom overnights, scout programs, and off-site programs at numerous Chicago locations. This position is partially funded by the United States Forest Service International Division and their Wings Across America program through September, 2013.

Knowledge/Skills/Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, education, and/or related field
  • Training in the field of formal or non-formal education preferred
  • One year experience working in a formal (classroom) or non-formal (museum, zoo, nature preserve) educational setting strongly preferred
  • Experience working with Pre K-12th grade students in an educational or recreational setting
  • Bilingual (Spanish) required
  • Knowledge and ability to present general science, nature, and the environment content to a diverse population of learners
  • Working knowledge of MS Office, Outlook, Windows XP
  • Ability to physically lift, transport, and carry program materials off-site and throughout the Museum
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple projects and tasks at once, as well as lead activities indoors and outdoors
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other educators, outside partners, volunteers, and Museum staff
  • Comfort handling living and non-living collections after training
  • Valid driver’s license is required.  Access to vehicle required

Principal Roles and Responsibilities

  • Model quality science and environmental science instruction in Nature Museum programs and community based programs, particularly Head Start
  • Develop relationships with teachers, parents, students, and other members of the communities we serve
  • Consider audience diversity to create an inclusive learning environment
  • Develop and implement age appropriate curriculum and activities for Museum education programs both on and off-site
  • Seek out new opportunities and partnerships that promote the Museum’s mission to reach new and diverse audiences
  • Collaborate within the Museum, the community and with outside organizations
  • Evaluate existing and new programs
  • Assume a leadership role for programs or initiatives when appropriate.
  • Provide Chicago youth and their families with experiential, educational enrichment programs that encourage family exploration to local Museums
  • Participate in special Museum-wide events and planning committees when appropriate
  • Support all regular functions of the Education Department
  • Some weekends and evenings are required

Director, Marketing and Special Events

Reports to: Vice President, External Affairs
Status: Full Time

Position Description: The Director leads the marketing and promotional activities for the Museum – now the 6th most attended Museum in the Park in Chicago! The Director manages our Special Events team – promoting the Museum as a venue for rental for special events including weddings, corporate events, and special occasion and birthday parties.

Key responsibilities include:

Marketing:

  • Acts as a central strategist, developing targeted marketing and promotional campaigns advancing the brand awareness of the Museum and its programs and exhibits
  • Executes comprehensive marketing and promotion plans for key exhibits, programs and activities, along with major fundraising efforts and Museum-wide initiatives (including the annual 5K walk/run). Integrates PR, social media, advocacy and promotions into supporting programs and events
  • Identifies sponsorship opportunities – for exhibits, programs and events -- and prepares materials and sponsorship proposals for donor solicitations.  Works closely with sponsors to assure all sponsor benefits are delivered and to jointly market and promote exhibits and programs
  • Works with outside public relations counsel and the Web and Social Media Manager to assure presence in the media, including print, online and social media
  • Works with volunteers and board leadership as related to key Museum projects, priorities and goals

Special Events:  Promote and sell the museum space for weddings, corporate events and birthday parties.  The overall objective is to achieve revenue goals set by management. 

  • Supervise a Special Events Sales Representative and outside events logistic staff
  • Respond to incoming inquiries, meet with potential clients and handle contract negotiations
  •  Develop  a target list of corporate/non-profit/hotel meeting planners
  • Bring new ideas to generate additional revenue
  • Attend final walk-through appointments and work closely with event logistics
  • Maintain accurate and monthly revenue reporting
  • Network with industry professionals

 Knowledge/Skills/Experience Required:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public affairs or related discipline with measurable experience in marketing or a related field
  • Experience in a museum or art related environment, a plus.
  • A high energy, action-oriented, hands-on, and talented individual who thinks both strategically and executionally
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience working with a creative team; ability to build and maintain strong internal relationships within a diverse institutional environment; ability to meet deadlines and prioritize to manage multiple projects and meet multiple deadlines at once
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in sales and strong interpersonal and persuasion skills
