Airplane
The airplane is moving people and packages from one
place to another.
Airplanes transport people to and
from places where they live, work, and play. But airplanes
also move plants, animals, and germs from one country
to another, sometimes disrupting whole ecosystems.
What other
things in the mural are flying? |

Prehistoric Forest in Gas Meter
Does your house have a gas meter like this?
Forests from thousands of years
ago have died and turned into the natural gas, oil, and
coal (fossil fuels) that power our homes, cars, and trains. Read your home gas meter today and tomorrow (at the same
time!) to see how much gas you used in one day. |

Dragonfly
The dragonfly has six legs and four wings.
Where do dragonflies live near you?

Farmland and Corn
Do you like to eat corn?
Farmland gives us the food we eat,
the plants and grains we use to feed animals like cows
and pigs, and the plants we use to make our clothing (cotton).
The corn in the farm fields will be transported by train
or truck to our stores.
Do you know what state your corn comes from? Go to your grocery store and ask the produce manager. |

Tree and Forest
The tree is being cut down to give us wood.
Old forests of trees give animals
healthy shelter to live but also give us wood for building
our own shelters. The spotted owl endangered species debate resulted from clearcutting policies in northwestern forests. Can you find the spotted owl in the mural?
Do you live in a town that once was
a forest? Where is the forest nearest you? |
