Life between the Dunes: The Marsh (Interdune Marsh)

New ecosystems form in nooks and crannies between the dunes as they age. In low points, marshes like this one are likely to form. The rich mud makes perfect conditions for certain kinds of plants. These plants are noticeably different from the ones that live in the dryness of the high dunes. An abundance of plants creates a good environment for animals, too. The plants provide food for them to eat, and provide places for them to find shelter from predators and adverse weather.

Mud
The mud is alive. If you were to take a teaspoonful of it and put it under a microscope, you’d find thousands of bacteria, hundreds of algae, and many other microorganisms. These little creatures help support the lives of larger plants and animals.

Osprey (Pandion haliaetus)
The handsome osprey lives all around North America, wherever it can find fresh fish to eat.
Egret
When it isn’t flying, this lovely white bird likes to wade in shallow water and dip its bill under the surface to find small fish to dine on.
Great blue heron (Ardea herodias)
The great blue heron is one of the tallest birds in North America, standing four-feet tall on long skinny legs.
