Flight for Survival

Description of the Unabridged Flight for Survival Teachers Guide

Through the use of the video tape, classroom activities and field trip activities, the Flight for Survival Science Explorers program integrates the tape's theme on the plight of the bald eagle with the Chicago Academy of Sciences' work on the reintroduction of the peregrine falcon to the Chicago area. The activities in the unabridged Teachers Guide are arranged in 10 lessons:

Lesson 1: Eagle Lore
Students learn the significance of the bald eagle throughout history and begin to learn the importance of scientists and what they do.

Lesson 2: The Endangered Eagle
Students view the video Flight for Survival and create hypotheses on ways humans can help to save the bald eagle.

Lesson 3: Career Connection
Students review the video and their hypotheses to identify ways people are helping the bald eagle, making connections to applicable careers.

Lesson 4: The Owl Game
Students play a game about owls to learn the effects of pesticides in the food chain.

Lesson 5: DDT in the Food Chain
Students learn how the pesticide DDT affects the reproductive system of birds such as the eagle and peregrine falcon through calculations and experiments, and learn about the special adaptations of raptor's beaks and talons.

Lesson 6: Field Trip to the Chicago Academy of Sciences
Students gather data on the habitats, food sources, and adaptations of the bald eagle, peregrine falcon and barn owl using the exhibits at the Academy.

Lesson 7: The Peregrine Falcon
Students design a program to save the peregrine falcon based on their knowledge.

Lesson 8: Raptor Behavior
Students identify the habitat, innate actions and characteristics of the bald eagle, peregrine falcon and barn owl through the study of resources they have gathered.

Lesson 9: Raptor Habitat
Students discover the habitats of the bald eagle, peregrine falcon and barn owl.

Lesson 10: Resolving Environmental Dilemmas
Students develop a greater understanding of their individual impact on the environment through questions raised in simulated environmental situations.
