Journey to Save a Crane
Description of the Unabridged Journey to Save a Crane Teachers
Guide
The activities in the unabridged Teachers Guide are arranged in 9 lessons:
Lesson 1: Science Exploration
Students brainstorm to generate a list of hypotheses about the knowledge,
techniques, and strategies scientists need in order to study and preserve
endangered species.
Lesson 2: Journey to Save a Crane
Students view the videotape. They compare the ideas they generated in Lesson
1 to the work of Dr. Archibald, and then modify their own strategies.
Lesson 3: Animal Behavior
Students observe an animal and formulate a plan for protecting it. After
this experience they discuss how research on animal behavior is challenging
and rewarding.
Lesson 4: Migration
Students locate and track the migratory routes of the Siberian crane on
a map
in a way similar to that of an ornithologist tracking the satellite signal
of a
banded crane.
Lesson 5: Migration Game
Students identify factors influencing the migration of the cranes.
Lesson 6: Field Trip to The Chicago Academy of Sciences
Students make a Crane Field Notes Booklet and use the booklet to record
observation of Siberian cranes, sandhill cranes, and whooping cranes at
the museum.
Lesson 7: Help Wanted-Scientists!
Students examine some sciencerelated careers which were featured in or pertain
to the videotape. They write a help-wanted ad for one of the careers.
Lesson 8: Resolving Crane Dilemmas
Students discuss issues and questions related to the survival of cranes.
Lesson 9: The Crane Friend, Shape-Shifter
Students use their knowledge of crane behavior to create a personal legend
which includes a solution to the cranes' endangerment.
