As soon as the fire had subsided the class was able to go into the ashes to explore what was left behind!!!!

After the burn this mouse was found. The mouse didn't lose a home though. Even though his habitat had been burned, there were other grasses and areas nearby where he could survive!

This is a nest where several pheasants have put their eggs. Not all of the eggs would have hatched even if the grasses hadn't been burned. We took four eggs back to show the classroom. Leftover eggs will be eaten by predators. By the next evening, the eggs had been scattered about and some showed evidence of being eaten.

This rabbit's nest was burrowed down into the soil, so when the fast moving fire went over it , only one rabbit was burned. However when John checked the nest twenty-four hours later, the other two rabbits were gone.
